PGI Piedmont Hazelnuts The quality of PGI (Protected Geographical Indication) Piedmont Hazelnuts is guaranteed by the ‘Consorzio Tutela Nocciola Piemonte’ protective body, appointed by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture. To this end guidelines have been drawn up, primarily defining the areas where Piedmont Hazelnuts can be produced, the density of the orchards and the quality of cultivar to be used, cultivation methods, processing and labelling. In order to ensure that all the guidelines are followed, the ‘Consorzio Tutela Nocciola Piemonte’ refers to the I.N.O.Q. (Istituto Nord-ovest di Qualità= North-west Quality Control Institute) to carry out the necessary inspections. La Gentile has held the Certification since 2000, the year in which Piedmont Hazelnuts were first awarded PGI status. Production of this food item may also be carried out with PGICertified Piedmont Hazelnuts. (NB: the logo of the PGI certification can only be used on PURE products, i.e. made up of 100% PGI Piedmont Hazelnuts. It cannot be used in reference to the company or alongside other certification logos). ISO 22000:2005 Certification This standard is applied on a voluntary basis to operators in the food sector in order to harmonize pre-existing national and international food quality and safety standards. It is based on the principles of the HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) defined by the Codex Alimentarius and it is in line with the previous ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 standards. Although it is not obligatory, this standard is now a benchmark for operators for the application of community regulations concerning food hygiene and safety. B.R.C. (British Retail Consortium) Certification – Food. Established in the United Kingdom in 1998 in response to manufacturing demands, developed and introduced by the BRC Food Technical Standard to evaluate the producers of retail brand goods. Over time the application of this standard has become more and more widespread throughout Europe, also in areas which are not strictly production but interfunctional, making it a Global Standard. The increasing application of this standard has led to limitations however, so the original project has been divided into different specific sectors: Food, Packaging, Consumer Products and Storage and Distribution. I.F.S. (International Food Standard) Certification Also in this case the standard derives from the need to check manufacturers of retail brand goods, yet it is mainly used as a check tool by company auditors, since it is made up of a check list of requirements to be fulfilled. It focuses solely on production and primary packaging, disregarding everything to do with the purchase of raw materials, product storage and distribution. Since much attention has recently been focused not only on product quality but above all safety, a much wider concept, which also includes the former, for a few years now an increasing number of companies have felt the need to collaborate with partners that can offer certain guarantees while containing auditing and checking costs. As a result more and more operators prefer to work only with certified partners and that is why in 2007 La Gentile began a process to meet the most widespread and modern standards of certification, ending on 27 March 2008 when the company obtained the approval of the three strictest protocols with the maximum points. Each of these standards is constantly monitored and updated by the respective checking and management bodies and La Gentile is always aware of changes and ready to upgrade to new disciplinary requests. |
